Behind every home is a family—and behind McCaffrey Homes is a family legacy rooted in shared values, integrity, and long-term vision.
Over 50 years ago, Bob and Karen McCaffrey joined her father, John Bonadelle, a local home building pioneer, to build homes for families in the Central Valley. The tradition continues with the addition of Bob and Karen’s son, Brent, and their son-in-law, Ash Knowlton, to the company.
The Story
Fifty years ago, McCaffrey Homes began with a simple belief: that building homes is about more than structures—it’s about the lives lived inside them.
What started as a family-led vision has grown into generations of thoughtful communities, built with care, collaboration, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
Through every chapter, the focus has remained the same: creating places people are proud to call home and neighborhoods built to last.
Through The Years
1970s
The story of McCaffrey Homes began with the union of a dynamic team when Karen Bonadelle married Robert “Bob” McCaffrey on May 15, 1976.
1970s
Raised in a family deeply rooted in homebuilding, Karen inherited her passion for building homes from her father, John Bonadelle, a pioneering figure in the field.

After a notable football career, Bob brought his leadership, perseverance, and competitive drive into the homebuilding industry.

With John guiding them, Bob and Karen began building homes in Madera in the Bonadelle and Madera Ranchos communities, laying the foundation for McCaffrey Homes.

By the end of the decade, they had expanded into Fresno County, completed their first communities, and established the core values that would guide the company for generations.

The 1980s marked a period of growth and independence, highlighted by the acquisition of Bonadelle’s homebuilding company, Trend Homes, and the founding of McCaffrey Home Realty.

The company expanded across the region, empowering more families to achieve the dream of homeownership.

What began as a family venture transformed into a distinct organization to serve and develop communities for Central Valley families.

Throughout the decade, the company developed numerous residential neighborhoods in the new Fig Garden area of Northwest Fresno.

As the Central Valley experienced continued growth, McCaffrey Homes grew alongside it, achieving new milestones in home production and marking the occasion with an all-company trip to Disneyland.

The introduction of the popular Trend Big Country Series reflected the company’s ongoing commitment to making quality homes more accessible to a wider range of buyers.

In the aftermath of September 11, Robert transformed an ordinary barn on McCaffrey family land into an American flag tribute, symbolizing patriotism, unity, and resilience.

The 2000s marked McCaffrey Homes as a trailblazer, being among the first to build within Loma Vista, the City of Clovis’s new urban village.

This era also marked McCaffrey Homes’ diversification with its first custom lot neighborhoods.

Honored for his leadership, Bob was elected to serve as Chairman of the Board of the Building Industry Association of the San Joaquin Valley.

McCaffrey Homes introduced Madison Place in Northwest Fresno, earning multiple National Awards for the home designs, and offering an impressive array of floor plan designs.

The decade marked a return to the company roots in Madera, as McCaffrey Homes became the inaugural builder at the Riverstone master-planned community.

The company co-founded Tesoro Viejo, a 1,600-acre master-planned community in Madera that opened in 2018.

McCaffrey Homes was also an inaugural builder at Tesoro Viejo, introducing two new products: the affordably priced Altura series for first-time homebuyers, and the Oaks series with larger homes for growing families.

Tesoro Viejo, a master-planned community co-founded by the McCaffreys, earned national honors as the 2023 National Community of the Year, by the National Association of Home Builders
